With Joomla, it may be easier to have the Main page set as a static page. One of the primary reasons would be less intermingling with the news conponent and any issues with duplicate content.

There is an excellent guide at http://www.geektips.net/make-joomla-static-page-default-frontpage.html with only one thing to add to it; it is possible to have two pages with the same name, inside different conponents. So this means that your new static page (home page), can also be named home, if that is what you wish. Alternatively, you can name it something else.
